This all happened after you left on your sleeper journey, so for 200 years, societies had been slowly going independent, siding with CORE, or siding with the Empress (though most hate her because of what she did to try to stop CORE). The Empress is apparently immortal, and can possess individuals at any time to make them do what she wants. The Empress tried to stop it using (some say) overly drastic measures, which resulted in the cataclysm.ĬORE was not destroyed by that, but the empire was now so torn apart that it didn't have the power it once did.
